The Language Barometer™

What is the Language Barometer?

The Language Barometer is designed for language providers committed to improving the student experience and the quality of language programmes worldwide, and to sharing best practice in language learning. The Barometer offers a snapshot of students’ perceptions, decision making and satisfaction – allowing you to maximise recruitment and retention. We offer you a comprehensive insight into the student experience in four dimensions – arrival, learning, living and support. The benchmarking tool has been used by more than 165 language schools in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, America and Canada providing a global benchmark of the international student experience.

The Language Barometer is designed for all types of English language programmes, from private providers to programmes within colleges and Universities, and is appropriate for programmes of all sizes, with the goal to provide affordable, effective insight. In Canada, the Language Barometer is run in collaboration with Languages Canada.

How will the Language Barometer benefit my institution?

Participating in the Language Barometer will:

  • Enhance your competitive advantage as a leading provider of language programmes
  • Inform policy and practice within your programme and institution
  • Identify priority areas for investment or support
  • Provide valuable market intelligence on students’ decision-making processes to inform marketing strategies
  • Improve recruitment of new students and retention of existing students
  • The study is designed for language providers committed to improving the student experience and the consistency and quality of language provision across the sector.

How does this work?

The questionnaire is designed by i-graduate in consultation with language schools and is developed and hosted online using leading survey software, Confirmit. The questionnaire is fully translated into 11 languages in addition to English, so that students can opt to respond to the survey questions in their mother tongue:

  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • English
  • French (Canadian)
  • Hindi
  • Japanese
  • Portuguese (Brazil)
  • Spanish
  • Thai
  • Vietnamese
  • Korean

We’ve made the process as simple as possible. After you register you will receive a hyperlink to your dedicated online survey. We’ll provide templates for launch and reminder emails for you to send to your students to alert them about the survey and to encourage them to respond. All analysis is conducted centrally by i-graduate’s team of experienced analysts, before being reported back to you. All data is reported anonymously and confirms fully with relevant data protection legislation. You’ll receive relevant, actionable data and analysis in readily accessible formats, allowing you to use the insights you gain from your students.

What if I already participate in the International Student Barometer?

If your institution already participates in the ISB, you can choose to “add-on” the Language Barometer as a module for a discounted cost, and we can include reporting on the Language Barometer with the ISB reporting as well. You’ll therefore get the benefit of comparing the experience of your language students with other international students in your institution, but also comparing your language programme with others worldwide.

When will the survey run and how do I join?

The survey will run from August to November 2013, at the optimum point for English language programme enrollments. You can choose the “window” when the survey will be live to your students that is the best fit with your programme schedule. You will need to register by July 2013 to participate in the survey.
